wolf moon

Happy Friday.

Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, once known as Women’s Christmas in Ireland. Neither of those things actually have anything to do with my day, which is a normal work day, but I find it interesting to note points like this on the calendar, even the ones that are relics of another time, maybe especially those - just to notice collective movement and progress toward healing and wholeness.

Personally, I’m looking forward to paying a lot of attention to my clutter clearing project this weekend.

The energies at hand support releasing and letting go, and I’m going to step into that flow and get rid of things that are simply in my way, have outlived their usefulness, or tie me to the past in unhelpful ways.

Tonight, at 6:08 pm EST, the Full Wolf Moon will reach its peak.

This is what the Farmer’s Almanac says about the Full Wolf Moon:

Amid the cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside [Native American] villages. Thus, the name for January’s full Moon.

Sometimes it was also referred to as the Old Moon, or the Moon After Yule. Some called it the Full Snow Moon, but most peoples applied that name to the next Moon.

A most interesting thing I learned just this morning - originally, it was believed that wolves howled at the moon because they were hungry but the truth is, it’s a mating call.

Lisa Stardust on Refinery 29 says:

It’s best to use this lunation as a chance to let go. Have yourself a good cry and give yourself the chance to heal. Moving forward and cutting ties is always hard, but sometimes it must be done — especially when we are dealing with self-preservation.

Jill Winterson on Yoga Journal says:

Cancer is the sign of the great Mother and teaches us to mother ourselves. Cancer assures us that just because our feelings sometimes seem to make no sense, they are still valid. They still affect us deeply, and they still can teach us something about ourselves. How we feel in a given situation can give us answers more quickly and accurately than any thought process or algorithm.

And here are two of my favorite astrologers to follow on Insta, Chani Nicholas and Virginia Rosenberg.

My full moon plans involve a hot salt bath, of course.

I might engage with this full moon yoga flow or go for a brisk walk or dance around my living room.

(I encourage dancing and even singing while you dance.)

Sunday, January 8, is David Bowie’s birthday.

There’s going to be a David Bowie takeover on Radio Woodstock on Saturday night.

You can listen to Radio Woodstock online, and I do, almost every day. it reminds me of what listening to the radio was like when I was a teenager - real people playing real music - meaning, the music they want to play because it matters to them.

Here’s a Bowie birthday playlist, if you celebrate.

Setting the stage for success

Tracy and I are going to do something on Sunday that we’ve talked about for a long time but never really tried.

We’re going to come up with a menu for the coming week, then spend a couple of hours meal and ingredient prepping.

Now, I would love to have a full set of glass food storage containers to put all of this prepped food in, so that when I opened up my refrigerator it glistened with the beauty of nourishment, but I’m in my midst of my no-buy January, so our prepped food will just have to go into an assortment of odd containers.

At this moment…

Those are my plans for the weekend.

I hope I can find the time today to do some art journaling.

Right now, I have my journals and cards and my morning cup of coffee. The holiday mugs and decorations have been put away, but I still have little white lights glowing around.

We’ve come to the end of the first week of the year, but I only just now feel like I’m coming out my cocoon and orienting to the fact that it is a new year.

Outside, the sun is shining and next to me, the little pug is snoring.

I’m wishing you a peaceful, beautiful, joyful weekend and a magical full moon!
